FPS Policy · Fairfield Public Schools
Effective October 21, 2026
Fairfield Public Schools (“FPS”, “the District”, “we”) provides FPS Policy, a Chrome extension that applies the District’s rules for how browser windows, tabs and downloads may be used on student Chromebooks — for example how many tabs may be open, or blocking a game hidden inside a blank tab. This policy explains what information it uses, where that information goes, and how long it is kept.
In short: FPS Policy looks at tabs, windows and downloads on the Chromebook to apply the District’s rules, and does it all on the device. It downloads the District’s settings, and sends nothing back: no account, no device, no browsing information.
1. Who it is for
FPS Policy is for students on District Chromebooks, at the schools the Technology Department chooses.
It is published privately to the District’s Google Workspace for Education domain and is meant for
District accounts (fairfieldschools.org and fairfieldschools.net) on District-managed Chrome browsers and Chromebooks. It is not offered to
the general public.
2. What information it uses
| Information | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Open tabs and windows: how many there are, and each tab’s address, title and icon | To apply the window and tab rules, such as spotting a page disguised as a Google app. | Checked on the Chromebook as the tab changes. Never recorded or sent anywhere. |
| The name and type of a file being downloaded | To cancel downloads of web-page and Flash game files when that rule is on. | Checked on the Chromebook. Never recorded or sent anywhere. |
| The District’s settings for the rules | To know which rules are on. | Downloaded from the District’s Device Portal (device.fairfieldschools.org) every 30 minutes. The request carries no account, device or browsing information and no cookies. |
3. What it does not collect
- Browsing history, page contents, searches or anything typed
- Which account is signed in, or which device it is
- A record of what was blocked: nothing is logged or reported
4. What is kept on the device
The last copy of the District’s settings, and the time the browser started (so tabs restored at sign-in are not counted against the tab limit). Removing the extension deletes them.
5. Who receives information
- The District’s Device Portal — Receives the request for the settings, as any website would (including the network address it comes from). Nothing about the student or the device is sent.
The District does not sell this information, does not use it for advertising or for building marketing or commercial profiles, and does not share it except as described here or as required by law. The use of information obtained through the extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
6. Permissions it asks Chrome for
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
tabs | To count open tabs and read each tab’s address, title and icon, to apply the tab rules. |
webNavigation | To notice a web site loaded inside a blank tab, and a page adding history entries in bulk. |
downloads | To cancel downloads of web-page and Flash game files when that rule is on. |
storage | To keep the last copy of the District’s settings, so the rules still apply offline. |
alarms | To download the District’s settings again every 30 minutes. |
7. Student information
Information about students that the extension handles on the District’s behalf is part of the student’s education record and is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Connecticut student data privacy law (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-234aa et seq.). Parents and eligible students have the rights those laws give them to inspect and request correction of education records.
The extension may be used by students, including students under 13, for educational purposes. Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) the District consents on behalf of parents to this limited, school-authorised use, and does not permit any commercial use of the information.
8. Changes to this policy
Changes are posted on this page with a new effective date. Material changes are also communicated through the District’s normal channels. Earlier versions are kept in the history of the repository this site is published from and are available on request.
