FPS Docs Helper · Fairfield Public Schools
Effective October 21, 2026
Fairfield Public Schools (“FPS”, “the District”, “we”) provides FPS Docs Helper, a Chrome extension that shows how a Google Docs document was written — its revisions, typing time, deletions, text pasted in from outside, and a step-by-step replay — from the document’s own version history. This policy explains what information it uses, where that information goes, and how long it is kept.
In short: FPS Docs Helper works only on Google Docs, only on documents you can already open, and entirely inside your browser. It reads a document’s version history from Google, works out the analytics on your computer and shows them to you. It sends nothing to the District or to anyone else, and keeps nothing but your display settings.
1. Who it is for
FPS Docs Helper is for teachers reviewing student writing in Google Docs.
It is published privately to the District’s Google Workspace for Education domain and is meant for
District accounts (fairfieldschools.org and fairfieldschools.net) on District-managed Chrome browsers and Chromebooks. It is not offered to
the general public.
2. What information it uses
| Information | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| The open document’s text and version history (each saved change, when it was made and by which account) | To count revisions, edits, deletions and pastes, estimate typing time, run the Paste & AI review and rebuild the document for the replay. | Read from Google Docs with your own Google sign-in, the same way Docs shows File → Version history. Processed in your browser and discarded when you close the tab. |
| The names or account IDs of the people who edited the document | To show who contributed to the document. | Comes with the version history from Google Docs. Shown to you; not stored or sent anywhere. |
| Your display settings: whether the banner is shown, and a show/hide choice for individual documents (stored by document ID) | To remember how you want the extension to behave. | Saved in your Chrome profile. If Chrome sync is on, Chrome copies it to your other signed-in browsers. |
3. What it does not collect
- Anything from websites other than Google Docs
- Your browsing history, keystrokes as you type, screenshots, files, email or Drive contents
- Analytics, tracking, cookies or advertising identifiers
- Copies of documents or of the analytics: they exist only while the tab is open
4. What is kept on the device
Only the display settings described above, in Chrome’s extension storage. Removing the extension deletes them. Document text and analytics are kept in memory for the open tab and are gone when it closes.
5. Who receives information
- Google — The extension asks Google Docs for the open document’s version history, signed in as you. Google already holds that history; the extension adds nothing to it.
The District does not sell this information, does not use it for advertising or for building marketing or commercial profiles, and does not share it except as described here or as required by law. The use of information obtained through the extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
6. Permissions it asks Chrome for
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
activeTab | To work with the Google Docs tab you are looking at when you use the toolbar button. |
tabs | To tell whether the current tab is a Google Docs document, so the banner is offered only there. |
storage | To remember whether you want the banner shown, everywhere or per document. |
docs.google.com (site access) | To show the banner on Google Docs and to read the open document’s version history from Google Docs. |
7. Student information
Information about students that the extension handles on the District’s behalf is part of the student’s education record and is protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Connecticut student data privacy law (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-234aa et seq.). Parents and eligible students have the rights those laws give them to inspect and request correction of education records.
The extension may be used by students, including students under 13, for educational purposes. Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) the District consents on behalf of parents to this limited, school-authorised use, and does not permit any commercial use of the information.
8. Changes to this policy
Changes are posted on this page with a new effective date. Material changes are also communicated through the District’s normal channels. Earlier versions are kept in the history of the repository this site is published from and are available on request.
